The Gridfinity guide

How does Gridfinity work?

Gridfinity works with two parts. A flat baseplate covered in 42 mm squares lines your drawer. Bins drop onto those squares and a small lip keeps them from sliding.

You do not need to buy the whole drawer at once. Add a few bins, use them for a week, then add more where you need them. Because every bin fits every grid, nothing you buy later ever goes to waste.

Add bins for the things you reach for most.
Fill the gaps over time. Old bins still fit the new layout.

Gridfinity baseplates that fit your drawer

A baseplate is the grid itself. Measure the inside of the drawer, wall to wall, and divide by 42 to see how many cells fit. Each cell is 42 mm, about 1.65 inches.

Almost no drawer divides evenly by 42, so there is always a small gap left over. Our drawer kit builder does the math for you. Type the inside width, depth, and height, and it plans baseplates that fill the space, then prices the whole kit at once.

Gridfinity magnets and magnet size

Gridfinity uses 6 mm by 2 mm disc magnets. A bin can hold up to four per cell, set into holes in the base.

In a drawer you do not need them. Gravity plus the baseplate lip does the work. Magnets earn their keep on portable trays and in vehicles, where a bump could lift a bin. We print magnet-ready bins on request, so you can add magnets any time.

Gridfinity toolbox and socket organizers

Tool chest drawers are where Gridfinity shines hardest. Sockets stand up in 1x1 bins, one size per bin. Screwdrivers get a rack. Pliers get a wide tray. When the drawer opens, every tool shows its face.

Gridfinity 2.0 and what changed

Gridfinity 2.0 is Zack Freedman’s update to his original spec. The part that matters did not change: the grid is still 42 mm, so new parts and old parts fit together.

The update trimmed what the design asks for. Magnets became a choice instead of a rule. Our bins follow the spec, so they drop onto any Gridfinity baseplate from any maker, in either version.

Should you print Gridfinity in PLA or PETG?

PLA is the classic choice for Gridfinity. It is rigid, holds sharp edges, and comes in the most colors, which makes it perfect for drawers and desks.

Pick PETG when a part will take heat or hard knocks, like a bin in a hot garage or a shop drawer that gets slammed. PETG is tougher and bends a little instead of cracking. Both print great, and you choose the color and material when you order.
